Dutch

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

First attested as in helessem around 1160. Compound of Old Dutch Hali (a personal name) and heem (home, settlement). The presence of a genetive -s- in the oldest attestations indicates that a derivation from Middle Dutch helle (incline) is impossible.

  • IPA(key): /ˈɦeːl.sʏm/
  • Hyphenation: Heel‧sum

Proper noun

[edit]
