Etymology[edit]
Potentially attested as Groote Heug and Klyne Heug in 1803-1820, attested with certainty as den Huy in 1838-1857. Etymology unknown. Potentially related to dialectal hui (“whey”), the dialectal expression hui drinken (“to do poorly, to fare ill”) (here as a reference to soil quality), or hui (“owl”). Compare Huijbergen.
