Etymology

First attested as jleke and yleke in the 13th century. Etymology unclear. Proposed etymologies from a hydronym *î-laki or from Old Frisian yl (“callus”) (referring here to hardened soil) do not match the oldest attestations. The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
