Etymology

Attested as Katham in 1665. Compound of the element kat (cat, lesser, arched ridge, mud) and Middle Dutch hamme (alluvial land in the bend of a watercourse). The first element may actually be a variant of kade (quay, embankment). Compare Kathoek.
