Etymology[edit]
From Middle High German *knudel, western variant of knutel, knütel. The word means “thick branch” in general Middle High German (compare German Knüttel (“club, cudgel”)), but does not have this sense in Central Franconian, which uses Knöppel and Klöppel instead.
