Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Blend of Limburg +‎ Zimbabwe.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˌlɪmˈbɑp.ʋə/, /ˌlɪmˈbɑ.bʋə/
  • Hyphenation: Lim‧bab‧we

Proper noun[edit]

Limbabwe n

  1. (usually derogatory) Limburg.

Usage notes[edit]

This word is used mostly disparagingly when trying to distance Limburg from the rest of the country (Netherlands or Belgium), due to its remote location relative to the economic centers of those countries, its cultural differences and its supposed corruptness. However, the term is also used by Limburgers themselves to add an exotic touch to the name.
