Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse Mýrkjartan, from Old Irish Muircheartach (literally mariner), from muir (sea) +‎ cheartach (warrior). Muircheartach was the name of an Irish king whose daughter Melkorka (Old Irish Mael Curcaigh (servant of Curcach)) was brought to Iceland as a slave.
