Etymology[edit]

From mȅđu +‎ gòra +‎ -je, literally [place] between the mountains. A similar construction is present in Ukrainian Міжгір'я (Mižhirʺja), Russian Межгорье (Mežgorʹje), Slovene Medgorje (now Mieger in Carinthia).
