Short form of Meldalen or Medaldalen, from Old Norse Meðaldalr, meðal (“middle”) +‎ dalr (“valley”).

Usage notes[edit]

The definite forms for place names ending with -dal are more common in Trøndelag dialect then the undefinite ones.
