Etymology[edit]

First attested as mulling(h)en in 1333-1336. Compound of Old Dutch Mulo (a personal name) and heem (home, settlement). An alternative proposed derivation from a compound formed of mul (dust, dry loose earth) and eng (agricultural land belonging to a village) is incorrect.
