Etymology

First attested as optie aeker, dair nu die zypkerc op staet in 1415. Compound of nieuw (new), Middle Dutch loes (drainage channel) and -drecht (ferry, watercourse). The toponym contrasts with Oud-Loosdrecht. Formerly called de Zijpe.
