- (Friesland) First attested as noortwolde in 1408. Compound of noord (“north-, northern”) and wold (“swamp forest, marsh forest”).
- (Groningen) First attested as nordawalda in 1384. Compound of noord (“north-, northern”) and wold (“swamp forest, marsh forest”). The element noord was added to distinguish the settlement from Zuidwolde.
