Etymology[edit]

Adapted borrowing of Icelandic Reykjavík, or a semi-learned borrowing from Old Norse Reykjavík, Røykjavík (bay of smokes). From reykja, genitive plural of reykr (smoke), and vík (bay). Equivalent to røyk +‎ vik (the original genitive plural *røykje- / *røykja- is lost).
