Etymology[edit]

First attested as rawertham in the 13th century. Derived from a compound of Proto-Germanic *hriad (reed) and Old Frisian werd (artificial mound used for habitation). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name. Compare Raard.
