Presumably borrowed from either Old Median *spantah or Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬆𐬧𐬙𐬀 (spəṇta),[1] both from Proto-Iranian *cwantáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćwantás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwen-tó-s, from *ḱwen- (holy, sacred) +‎ *-tós.
