Etymology[edit]

Possibly from Proto-Celtic *wertos, from Proto-Indo-European *wert-o-s, for Proto-Indo-European *wert- (“to turn”), or perhaps borrowed from Germanic, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *werþą (“worth, value”) of the same root.^[1]
