Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Indo-European *snoh₁téh₂ (“yarn, thread”), from *sneh₁(i)- (“to twist, wind, weave, plait”). Cognate with Latvian snāte (“linen cover”), Old Irish snáth (“thread”).
