Etymology[edit]
Lubotsky proposes non-Indo-European (substrate) origin.
Otherwise compared to Ancient Greek χερμάς (khermás, “stone”), particularly in the meaning “large block of stone”, if this is not itself of substrate origin, but the semantic connection is weak.[1] Kroonen compares Proto-Germanic *grumþuz ~ *grunduz (“ground”).[2]
