Unknown; perhaps borrowed from Semitic, compare Old Babylonian 𒈥𒄖𒌋 (mar-gu-u /⁠marġû⁠/, field), Arabic مَرْج (marj, meadow), and Afroasiatic terms Dangaléat mórgó (field), Oromo marga (grass).
