Etymology[edit]

The etymology of this term is unclear. Westermann reconstructs the term for "name" to Proto-Volta-Congo *-ni. It is not clear if this Proto-Yoruboid term is derived from this reconstruction, however, descendant terms with the /r/ root makes it more likely it is derived from this. The conversion from /d/ to /n/ or /r/ thus is possible. See cognates with a /d/-related root, Proto-Edoid *dhI-ni, Ibibio ejin, Proto-Gbe *yĩ́kɔ́, Dagbani yuli, Proto-Bantu *ìjínà For cognates with an /r/ or /n/ root, see Kamo ìíní, Ngundi erés, Proto-Idomoid *ɛɲɪ.

Other Volta-Congo languages also maintain a /w/ root, it is not clear if such roots are also cognate, see Ayere ewu, Oko-Eni-Osayen íwúrù
