Etymology[edit]
First attested as altoenae, s. annen parochie in 1570. Compound of the name of Saint Anne and parochie (“parish”). Originally named Altena, after the former domicile of one of the investors in the development of the Bildt. Compare Sint Anna and Sint-Annaland.
