Etymology[edit]

First attested as Sithert between 1135 and 1180. Etymology uncertain. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from Old High German sîte (mountainside), Latin secretarium (section of forest intended for logging) or sectura (common land). Compare Zijtaart, Zittard and Zittert.
