Etymology

From Middle High German Strāzburc, from Old High German Strāzburg (8th c.), also attested as pre-High German Stratiburg (6th c.), Latinised Strateburgum (5th c.). Equivalent to Straße (“road”) +‎ Burg (“town”), from a nearby crossing of two Roman roads.
