What is the differense between agave and aloe vera?

They are classified in separate genera, and often even in different families by botanists, so there are many, many differences. There are many species of Agave (that's the genus name), and these plants are closely related to yuccas (genus Yucca) in the family Agavaceae. Aloe vera is a particular species of the genus Aloe, and these plants are often classified in the Asphodelaceae. Agaves are native to the Western Hemisphere, while Aloes are native primarily to Africa and Arabia. The two families have different floral anatomy and chemistry, though they both belong to the same order (w:Asparagales), which also includes orchids and irises. --EncycloPetey 19:11, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
