(Notifying Atitarev, Cinemantique, Useigor, Wikitiki89, Stephen G. Brown, Guldrelokk, Fay Freak, Tetromino, Per utramque cavernam): The audio sounds strongly like it has non-palatal л. Is this a possible pronunciation? Benwing2 (talk) 02:31, 16 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Benwing2: The [л’] is distinctly palatal to me, I think you are mishearing. Guldrelokk (talk) 05:52, 16 February 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Guldrelokk This must be my English ear interfering ... when I listen closer I hear a clear [l] but not a palatalized [lʲ] or palatal [ʎ]. Is this normal for Russian? If so then that means the primary distinction between [л] and [л’] is not that the latter is palatalized but that the former is velarized, and if that's the case then I am doubly sure that we need to change the handling of {{ru-IPA}} so that non-palatalized [л] is displayed as [ɫ], as is done in ruwikt. @Benwing2: Russian hard ~ soft contrast is complex, affecting multiple features of consonants and neighbouring vowels. But I confirm that /л/ has a back secondary articulation much stronger than other hard consonants, and the clear [l] of e. g. German and French is perceived as /л’/.
