Untenable Etymology[edit]

There's no known sound change giving an Ossetic /f/ from a Proto-Indo-European /w/ in this position. Let's go with V. I. Abaev's etymology instead:

~ Goes back to Iran. *paθaka-, from paθ- ‘way’; actually a “guide”. Cf. Av. paθ-, O.Ind. path-, patha- ‘road’, ‘path’, pathaka- ‘traveler’, ‘guidebook’, Gr. πάτος ‘road’, ‘path’, etc. In the Scythian dialects, apparently, all three variants of the stem ‘path’ were present: 1. panti- (Παντικαπης; OJaF I 175), 2. pantā- (Oss. fændag), 3. paθ- (Scyth. Παταικος, Φιατακος, Oss. fætæg; OJaF I 176). Scyth. *paθ- is the probable source of the Germanic word for ‘path’ in Ger. Pfad, Eng. path, etc. (K l u g e). 2602:306:C4CE:9B89:7941:C89B:FF7D:6EF4 21:52, 6 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
