Derived terms[edit]

@Benwing2 With regard to the recent Slavic verb template, don't you think that this page should have imperfective first, along with the other verbs of motion? Vininn126 (talk) 12:32, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Vininn126 Why do you think that? Is in some sense ходить considered more basic than идти? Purely in terms of etymology, neither of these verbs is clearly derived from the other, and when looking at the semantic differences between the two nonprefixed verbs, it's not obvious to me which one is more basic. Putting imperfective first would cause pairs like выходить/выхаживать to be reversed from the natural derivational order; there aren't so many of these in the case of ходить/идти, but in the case of нести/носить, there are a lot of them. Or are you referring to the specific fact that -ходить is the imperfective counterpart to -йти in derived verbs? Benwing2 (talk) 19:39, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Benwing2 I am referring to your last statement and to pairs such as выходить/выйти, it seems rather odd to list *идти stems first on the page for ходить. Vininn126 (talk) 19:41, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Vininn126 I see, I was confused by your reference to the other motion verbs. Usually for the motion verbs I put all the derivations under the perfective form, but here the stems are suppletive so there are derivations under both. Do you think the we should list the -ходить/-йти derivations imperfective-first but the -ходить/-хаживать derivations perfective-first? Benwing2 (talk) 20:06, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Benwing2 This is a difficult case: would there be ANY sense in having multiple instances to keep groups together? i.e. Have -ходить/-йти forms together and -ходить/-хаживать forms together, but keep the -ходить forms together in both cases? Vininn126 (talk) 20:14, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Vininn126 Do you mean to have two separate groups of derived verbs, one for -ходить/-йти forms (where the -ходить form is imperfective) and one for -ходить/-хаживать forms (where the -ходить form is perfective)? This sounds OK to me although I'm not sure what you mean by "keep the -ходить forms together in both cases". Benwing2 (talk) 20:24, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Benwing2 Sorry, I meant first, not together. Vininn126 (talk) 20:31, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Vininn126 I see, sounds good. Benwing2 (talk) 21:37, 7 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
