etymology considered racist[edit]

Hi @Kutchkutch.

I was looking back at your summary, and didn't quite understand what you meant, when you said that the etymology could be considered racist? Would you care to elaborate on this, please?

@Kutchkutch: - oh nevermind, I understand, what you mean 😂. I thought you meant specifically with the letter غ. Do you know, by any chance, how this transition occurred (ie. from g → ġ)?

@Taimoorahmed11: As you probably figured out later, the potential racism is regarding the negative perception of the Gondi people and not /ɣ/. Since /ɣ/ does not occur as a phoneme in the ancestors of Urdu, /ɣ/ cannot be inherited, so it must be a hypercorrection. The hypercorrection is probably be due to the non-intuitive etymology and the influence of other terms containing /ɣ/ in Persian loanwords. This is similar to how پھ may be realised as /f/ instead of /pʰ/ under the influence of English and Portuguese loanwords. Kutchkutch (talk) 19:11, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
