ਬਾਪ (bāp)

[edit]

@Kutchkutch, Hi. I saw your edit and was pinged by it. To my knowledge, as someone originally from the Majha block, bāp is more Hindi or Urdu than Punjabi, and quite informal (almost derogatory) - not really used in Punjabi - but that being said, it is listed on Patiala University's dictionary as ਬਾਪ (bāp) being the actual lemma. نعم البدل (talk) 02:50, 28 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

@نعم البدل: Thanks for the reply. In most cases, the word-final u in Old Punjabi is deleted, which would result in modern Punjabi ਬਾਪ (bāp). However, since the u is retained and lengthened as Punjabi ਬਾਪੂ (bāpū), it raises the question of whether this retention and lengthening of u occurred at the Punjabi stage or the Middle Indo-Aryan stage. @Kutchkutch: Could it not be a diminutive case of ਬਾਪ (bāp)? Or maybe there's a stage between Old Punjabi and Modern Punjabi? نعم البدل (talk) 10:36, 29 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
