Etymology

[edit]

@Svartava, نعم البدل When the entry was created, the Prakrit etymon was *𑀉𑀯𑀯𑀝𑀤𑀺 (*uvavaṭadi). Perhaps this was obtained from 𑀉𑀯𑀯𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀇 (uvavaṭṭaï) corresponding to {{R:CDIAL|upavartatē|2240}} with 𑀝 (ṭa) instead of 𑀝𑁆𑀝 (ṭṭa) because it says with MIA. -- ṭ -- in {{R:CDIAL|úpapatati|2189}}. However, Prakrit *𑀉𑀯𑀯𑀟𑀇 (*uvavaḍaï) might be a better reconstruction compared to *𑀉𑀯𑀯𑀝𑀇 (*uvavaṭaï) since it seems that word-medial Prakrit 𑀟 (ḍa) becomes Punjabi / ڑَ (ṛa) analogous to Hindustani ڑَ (ṛa) / ड़ (ṛa). Also, Old Punjabi ਵੜਿ (vaṛi) does not to show any results in {{R:inc-opa:SGGS}}, and only exists in {{R:inc-opa:Glossary}} as:

vaṛi, v.t. 'compare' in kisu nāli tūṁ vaṛīai [< 12069 vṛtta- (*vṛta- ?)]
