It seems the Scandinavian rune poems have the name ending in -kan, while English has it ending in -c. I assume the reconstruction here came to be because the meanings in all poems are obviously the same. It's not my strong suit, but there seems to be consensus in all languages that the word 'birch' did not originally end in -an. Therefor I'll change the article.
