Borrowed via Manchu?[edit]

@Justinrleung I suspect it was borrowed through Manchu ᡨᡠᡵᡶᠠᠨ (turfan) as the Mandarin pronunciation is phonetically closer to Manchu than to Uyghur. RcAlex36 (talk) 16:03, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@RcAlex36: Possibly. When was this borrowed? If it's during the Qing dynasty, then it's very likely. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 16:58, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung: It's written as 土魯番 in the Ming dynasty, so it is probably not borrowed from Manchu. RcAlex36 (talk) 17:05, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Justinrleung: The modern Turfan dialect of Uyghur does not have /f/, per p. 29 of The Turfan Dialect of Uyghur. RcAlex36 (talk) 17:17, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@RcAlex36: I don't think I know enough of the historical development of Uyghur and Manchu phonology to comment. — justin(r)leung (t...) | c=› } 21:21, 30 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
