@Holodwig21 Are you sure there are Germanic cognates of this that would justify positing a Proto-Germanic ancestor? It looks like a straightforward calque of γΡνΡαλογία (genealogΓa) to me (this is what KΓΆbler also claims). β€” Mnemosientje (t Β· c) 16:14, 16 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Mnemosientje: Well I don't have cognates that would explained the word, but the existence of an "i" in gabaurΓΎiwaurd when the Gothic form, πŒ²πŒ°πŒ±πŒ°πŒΏπ‚πŒΈπƒ (gabaurΓΎs), doesnΒ΄t carry an "i" alludes me to the possibility of it coming from Proto-Germanic. πŒ·πŒ»πŒΏπŒ³πŒ°π…πŒΉπŒ²πƒ πŒ°πŒ»πŒ°π‚πŒ΄πŒΉπŒΊπŒΉπŒ²πŒ²πƒ 16:28, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
@Holodwig21: This is easily explained by the fact that πŒ²πŒ°πŒ±πŒ°πŒΏπ‚πŒΈπƒ (gabaurΓΎs) is an i-stem: the thematic vowel (in this case an i) is hidden in the nominative singular, but in compounds it very often does manifest. This is regular in Gothic compounds, you see it with the "hidden" -a- in a-stem nouns too when they are used to form compounds (see Category:Gothic compound words) β€” Mnemosientje (t Β· c) 16:53, 16 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Mnemosientje: if that the case then the Proto-Germanic reconstruction can be deleted, I’ll take care of it right now thank you for the clarification. πŒ·πŒ»πŒΏπŒ³πŒ°π…πŒΉπŒ²πƒ πŒ°πŒ»πŒ°π‚πŒ΄πŒΉπŒΊπŒΉπŒ²πŒ²πƒ 17:04, 16 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
