Talk:Dillan

Dillan is a Norwegian surname first brought to the United States in aroud 1890 by two brothers. First to emigrate was Ole Iversen Dillan, (1867-1958,) and wife Oline Olsdtr. Svegaard (1863- ,) who emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1889 and eventually settled in Prairie Farm, Wisconsin. Younger brother Jeremias Dillan, (1869-1961,) emigrated in 1891. He settled in Brainard, Minnesota. Fortuitously, on the same ship to America, he became acquainted with his future wife, Gurianna Jonsdtr. Overmoen, (1869-1968,) who was, also, from Vuku, Norway.

The family name of Dillan was taken on by the brother's grandfather, Jeremias Iversen Dillan, (1809 - 1888,) derived from the lease holding of Dillan, to which he moved as a young man to farm. Jeremias worked the permanent lease holding from 1848 to 1881 after which it was assumed by his son, (and the father of Ole and Jeremias,) Iver Jeremiassen Dillan, (1841-1920.) Such adoption of surnames was rather common at the time.

To date, all known USA surnames of Dillan are descendants of these two brothers - Ole Iversen Dillan and Jeremias Iversen Dillan. The given name of Dillan is becoming more frequent, especially among the descendants of the Dillan surname.
