If memory serves, I learned that a Judas goat was used to lead sheep to slaughter, since it resembles a sheep enough that sheep would follow it because of their herd instinct, but the human operators of an abattoir could easily distinguish their trained goat from the sheep it was leading to slaughter. There is much less demand for goat meat than there is for lamb and mutton. Dick Kimball (talk) 13:35, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
