There are many spellings of this surname: Valim, Vallim, Vallin, Valine. Most of the families in U.S.A., Canada and South America with this family name have ancestors who emmigrated from Azores Islands, where the name ocurrs only in Pico Island. The family surname is said to have originated in France, from where two brothers emmigrated to the Azores Islands around 1550. In a 1504 document, from Lajes Village, three men with surname Valim were mentioned as belonging to the first group of settlers, taxed for the construction of a new church in the Village . There are occurrances of the surname in France and Belgium (Vallin), in Sweden (Wallin) and in many countries of South America, mostly in Brazil.
