A "bogus misspelling", with 885 b.g.c hits to amoeba's 1860? You're not mutæting unto another user, are you? -- Keffy 15:54, 31 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Come on, a look in any print dictionary that shows US variants confirms that this exists. ResolvedPaul G 16:35, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

"usual spelling?"[edit]

The article states that ameba is the usual spelling of amoeba in the US. I do not think this is the case. As the US media covers amoebae stories quite frequently these days, they are using the word "amoeba". a quick google news search shows this. 24.196.25.231 17:14, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. A look at COCA confirms your point. Amoeba outnumbers ameba 128 to 5. DCDuring TALK 02:35, 12 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

The following sources indicate that the more modern spelling "ameba" has become more common than the spelling with oe in US English. In fact it has apparently replaced the spelling with oe (which was in fact not the original English spelling) in international scientific usage:
