I'm not sure if a usage note warning is warranted or not. In America, you'd want to avoid mistakenly calling one of these a "bum bag" if you were addressing an elementary school classroom (unless you like hearing 25 kids tittering.) "Bum" is a cutesy, mild word for ass, while fanny is even milder (in America) and more cutesy. --Connel MacKenzie 17:36, 21 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Indeed. I'm almost tempted to add a humorous tag, but I don't think everyone finds it as funny as I do perhaps. Tooironic 06:02, 6 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Humorous tags are for words that are used with a humorous intention, not words that someone may happen to find funny. Also, I don't get the point. Both "bum" and "fanny" mean "buttocks" in the respective dialects where "fanny pack" and "bum bag" are used. Only that using "fanny pack" in Britain (where "fanny" = "vulva") could be much more problematic than the other way round.
