The Svenska akademiens ordbok have a theory about the origin of the Swedish word "knulla" coming from the word knuzla [modern Swedish dialectal(?) word knussla, as in "knussla ihop", my note], a verb for squeezing together (knulla have also been used in Swedish as an onomatopoeic word for some bird calls, before it got its more widespread vulgar use). If canoodle and knulla is of the same origin, this may interest someone: http://g3.spraakdata.gu.se/saob/show.phtml?filenr=1/123/118.html

"Folk Etymology" is another way of saying "no evidence exists". Can someone with better resources than me Be Bold and sort this comical mess out? Etrigan (talk) 22:03, 20 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for bringing this up. Actually, I'd say folk etymology requires evidence too, ... if we're just making it up, it's not even at the level of folk etymology, it's original research. But the flip side of this is that if folk etymology is all we've got, it is good to mention. Presumably this has been written about somewhere, though it may not be close at hand.
