It appears the word is pronounced differently if it is an animal (chamwa) or if it is the hide (chami). Hence the request for IPA symbols...zigzig20s 14:50, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, though my guess would be that both senses were formerly pronounced "shammy" and the animal sense (being learned as chamois don't exist in Britain) was later re-Frenchified. 178.4.151.236 18:32, 30 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
