Talk:cigar
This page says that cigarra is spanish for grasshopper. The article for it is consistant with this, so it leads me to think it is the right answer. I am confused though, as the Wikipedia page here has a caption on the upper right saying "from the Spanish cigarro "cigar", which was perhaps derived from the Spanish cigarra "cicada" —(OED)" so does that mean Wikipedia is wrong? If someone knows for sure, please fix whichever entry is wrong, I do not know for certain. While Cicadas and Grasshoppers are both insects, they're clearly very different species and I'm guessing the spanish might have different words for them, despite their common habit of singing. Would it be helpful to have a disambig for Cigarra on WP as we do here with cigarra? Ty 00:14, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is not wrong, Wiktionary is. Cigarra is cicada, not grasshopper. I fixed our entries. Thanks for pointing to this. --Vahagn Petrosyan 00:00, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
Notes & Queries via Google Books has this curious article on the word cigar. While the etymology is probably dismissible, the opening statement "What is the origin of the word cigar, or as it is now pretty generally spelled, segar?" is interesting.--Prosfilaes 06:27, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
