Pronunciation (homographs)[edit]

Apparently, the fish is pronounced with everything said - the 'b' is pronounced, and the sound in the first syllable is the 'dog' sound.zigzig20s 21:11, 6 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Reference for my claim : "Mémento de phonétique anglaise" by Michel Ginésy (86). Obviously he is a Frenchman but overall his book is pretty reliable - except for the issue over the pronunciation of 'directly' in the 'immediately' sense perhaps. zigzig20s 16:00, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll check this in the OED at some point and then add the pronunciations. — Paul G 16:11, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done it seems. (And Chambers 1908 confirms this pronunciation.) Equinox 13:18, 5 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Possible missing sense[edit]

We list one kind of fish, but it might be others too. Chambers 1908 lists it as "a name applied to the gaper, a sea-perch, and to a species of wrasse". Equinox 13:18, 5 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
