Cornage was the tenure of some tenants of the Crown in the border areas with Scotland. A number of tenants of low political significance used this a claim that they did not owe military service or scutage to King John save an obligation to serve against the Scots. This legal claim was the one of the elements of the revolt against King John which led to his abandonment of the project of an expedition to reclaim his lost possessions in Normandy - and formed part of the complex issues which led to the plot against his life and the baronial rebellion leading to Magna Carta.
