In the section: Noun

crematory (plural crematories)

A crematory is:

The establishment or furnace that cremates bodies.

This is not the common usage (although it is stated as such in the Oxford dictionary, but not in Collins):

  • A crematorium or crematory is the establishment (although most people would say the building itself). The plural is crematoria, crematoriums or crematories.
  • A cremator is the actual machine used for reducing a corpse to ashes (it is also known as a furnace or a retort).
  • A cremulator or crembola is a machine specifically designed to reduce that which is left to "ashes".
  • Cremains or ashes is what is left.
