Context[edit]

This phrase interests me. I don't have a source handy, but it might be interesting to other people to know that this refers to baking a pie, not to eating it. The ease of pie is contrasted with the difficulty of cake (e.g., layer cake), which was a relatively difficult and skilled task in the days before reliable leavening agents, electric mixers, and automatic thermostats in the ovens.
