Broader historical sense[edit]

Our def is both modern and US-specific. Chambers 1908 has this; "(orig.) a crime punished by total forfeiture of lands, etc.; [later] a grave crime, beyond a misdemeanour, as that punishable by penal servitude or death". Equinox 00:25, 23 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
