Not quite a gentleman?[edit]

John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) seems to assert that a "gent" is not a true gentleman: "Gent, a contraction of “gentleman,”—in more senses than one. A dressy, showy, foppish man, with a little mind, who vulgarizes the prevailing fashion." Equinox 00:25, 5 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
