The Ukrainian definition for this word is reversed logic. That is, the word came to use in Western Canada first and was used by Ukrainians here. The Ukrainian word for underwear translates as 'underpants'. I have heard that the word comes from Hungarian. Helifino.

I grew up in Ontario and my buddies and I used the word so it isn't restricted to the west.
