A grease monkey is the title given to the apprentice mechanic in a service station, He starts as a man of all work keeping the station clean, seeing that oil jars are filled or oil racks stocked with cans. He is the go to man for oil changes and chassis lubes, fixing flat tires, manning the gas pumps, checking under the hood and cleaning the windshields, changing burned out bulbs and often aiming headlights. Sometimes the work is split between two or more workers if there is a lot of tire repair work and gasoline sales. The grease monkey will handle chassis lubes, oil changes, tire rotation, and the battery charging rack, and may also handle mufflers, shocks, and brakes, while the outside men handle gas and oil sales, flat repair, windshield wipers, and keeping the driveway and restrooms clean. All engine and drive-train work is usually left to trained mechanics. — This unsigned comment was added by 71.81.244.13 (talk).
