English pronunciation[edit]

Can anyone source an English pronunciation for this word? I checked a bunch of online sources but none of them even had the word let alone a pronunciation for it. 2WR1 (talk) 02:19, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not in OED (gasp). Not in my (approx. 15yo) Chambers. Equinox 02:20, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Equinox: Hmmm, suspicious... 2WR1 (talk) 02:24, 15 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's a jargon word, I guess, used almost exclusively by craft breweries that may also use other jargon words. A local brewery here suggests that it rhymes with bite but the way they indicate it isn't clear, and looking through YouTube shows at least three other possibilities: pronunciations rhyming with fruit, brew it, and a vowel I can't quite make out are all available on YouTube. The fact that the spelling isn't standardized leads me to believe that the pronunciation isn't either. The BITE rhyme is actually one that I cannot find on YouTube, so I think I may have misinterpreted the local brewery's page, which just said Gruit (grut or gruyt) and may not have been an attempt to give a pronunciation.
